Marriott Mena House — Cairo

It wasn’t just the Giza pyramids we came to Egypt to see, but it sure was nice staying right next door to them on the Giza Plateau at the iconic Marriott Mena House! We stayed a total of four nights at this delightful and well-run property, three nights at the beginning of our three week sojourn and a night at the conclusion. Comfortable, affordable and great food options including a stupendous buffet for breakfast and dinner. Never really got tired of the buffet although did eat one night at the onsite Italian restaurant. And shocked ourselves that we never got over to the Indian restaurant! That’s not like us.

While in town we shopped in the old bazaar of Khan El Khalili and visited two museums, Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization — our hands-down favorite of the two! The GEM, Grand Egyptian Museum, is scheduled to open soon. While our visit to Egypt may have been a “one and done” experience, should we come back we would without hesitation stay at the Mena House and plan to spend at least two days at the GEM and possibly take in a little bit more of Cairo. For lunch try Khan El Khalili Restaurant et Naguib Mahfouz Coffee Shop and then walk the market afterwards.

We traveled on a package tour but the Marriott Mena House rack rate is about US$325 a night.
