Marriott Mena House — Cairo

It wasn’t just the Giza pyramids we came to Egypt to see, but it sure was nice staying right next door to them on the Giza Plateau at the iconic Marriott Mena House! We stayed a total of four nights at this delightful and well-run property, three nights at the beginning of our three week sojourn and a night at the conclusion. Comfortable, affordable and great food options including a stupendous buffet for breakfast and dinner. Never really got tired of the buffet although did eat one night at the onsite Italian restaurant. And shocked ourselves that we never got over to the Indian restaurant! That’s not like us.

While in town we shopped in the old bazaar of Khan El Khalili and visited two museums, Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization — our hands-down favorite of the two! The GEM, Grand Egyptian Museum, is scheduled to open soon. While our visit to Egypt may have been a “one and done” experience, should we come back we would without hesitation stay at the Mena House and plan to spend at least two days at the GEM and possibly take in a little bit more of Cairo. For lunch try Khan El Khalili Restaurant et Naguib Mahfouz Coffee Shop and then walk the market afterwards.

We traveled on a package tour but the Marriott Mena House rack rate is about US$325 a night.

The second grouping of images below are some of the highlights of Cairo and Giza during our stay.

Grand Aton Hotel — Minya

Can we please go back to the 5⭐️ Mena House in Cairo!?

With no satisfaction, we present our worst hotel in Egypt — The Grand Aton in Minya, Middle Egypt. The images below do not convey how truly bad it was. So bad, we added it to our Worse Worldwide, only our fifth such distinction in as many years of our constant traveling.

The property was under renovation. (Not always a complete joy killer for us in the past.) It definitely is on the road less traveled with only 1 in 100 organized tour groups cycling through this Middle Egypt stretch choosing inside to fly Cairo to Luxor or Aswan to continue their journeys. Our traveling group of 35 folks only fit in certain sized facilities and the Grand Aton was happy to set aside their wrecking ball and sledge hammers and lead us through the rubble to our rooms. It’s on the Nile river but there was really no charm about it. At least mow the lawn. And return Rich’s favorite shorts that disappeared into housekeeping purgatory!

Ultimately, it was all about seeing the astounding ruins that were once the splendor of Medium, Pyramid of Amenemhat III at Hawara near Faiyum (where Rich had a strange physical reaction including visions), the Tombs of Beni Hasan near Abu Qirqas and Tuna-el-Gebel near Mallawi and Tell el-Amarna. See some of those highlights below the hotel pics.

House of Life Hotel — Abydos

A hotel with Life! The House of Life Hotel in Abydos has spirit! And it’s a five minute stroll to the town’s main attraction, the Temple of Abydos! We only stayed one night on our package tour but it made a lasting impression having met the lovely Dutch woman who is one of the driving forces behind this wonderful, affordable three star property. Wonderful pool and artistic touches throughout the property. Great dinner and great shops in the lobby where we found lots of high quality essential oils.

See pics from the temple in the second carousel below the hotel pics.

Steigenberger Nile Palace — Luxor

When we are on a group tour with a grueling schedule, a five star hotel can make us weep. We were ready for some pampering at Steigenberger Nile Palace. We were only there for one night. God forbid the tour company would sensibly arrange for a second night so we could all catch our breath from the rapid-fire itinerary! We enjoyed it while it lasted — about 16 hours. But we managed to still do laundry, have a sumptuous feast and get a good night’s sleep! Of course, we would recommend it if you are in the neighborhood. But do yourself a favor — stay at least two nights. Better yet, three.

Cairo, Alexandria and The Nile

Egypt Grand Tour

We’ve never done a package tour! Absolutely nothing against them but we tend to want to explore destinations more slowly than tour operators’ generally approach. A visit to Egypt and Jordan felt different to us. We need an expert for such an epic and kinda overwhelming place of such mystery and historical significance. We decided to splurge and tag along with the best.

We’ll discover the Land of the Pharaohs with geologist Dr. Robert M. Schoch, one of the most notable and widely respected scholars pursuing the true origins and antiquity of civilization.

We’ll explore the wonders of the ancient Egyptian civilization – from the tombs of the greatest pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, through the less-visited but no less impressive sites of Middle Egypt, to the magnificent temples of Karnak and Luxor and the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. The Great Pyramid and the entire Giza Necropolis will be open just for us and the small group we join there. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to stand between the paws of the Great Sphinx rather than seeing it from a distant viewing platform. We’ll visit to the country’s newest landmark, the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to an immense collection of ancient treasures, including King Tutankhamun’s golden mask.

Throughout the tour, we’ll stay in historic hotels, sail the Nile, visit some of the most mysterious ancient sites in the world, and embrace the unique Egyptian culture. Can’t wait! Link to tour company website with complete details.
