Reflections on Cambodia
We visited Cambodia from January 24 - February 6, 2017 enjoying Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Expat friends of ours living in China told us not to rush through Siem Reap and to enjoy the many sights and good restaurants. So we booked nine nights at a men-only resort in a good location and enjoyed the pool and other amenities. Even though this time of year is the slightly cooler season it was quite hot and we struggled with heat rash on those days we toured around Siem Reap. The car of our hired driver did not have an adequate air conditioner and that didn’t help. This visit was part of our Keeping it Fresh tour, our first foray to Southeast Asia and we were, coming from the very moderate climate of North America’s Pacific Northwest, unaccustomed to the hotter overall climate. Siem Reap was a gem of a visit and we are seriously considering a return visit in 2024-25 or sometime soon afterwards as we endeavor to spend even more of our year in Southeast Asia.
We flew to Phnom Penh and stayed four nights enjoying museums, important historical sights and interesting restaurants including finding on the menu the occasional cannabis pizza. We bought one of our favorite pieces of art for our home collection in a private gallery right down the street from the National Museum of Cambodia.
We left Phnom Penh on a high-speed river boat, entering the Mekong delta region of Vietnam — the only time anywhere we’ve crossed a country border in a boat on a river!
